Contains an ancient hypothetical place name 'Wulf(a)mere'='wolf pond', cf WOOLMER FOREST. The pond is referred to as about 1280 'Wolmereslak' and the valley below was clearly 'Wulf(a)denu' (cf 1298 'Wolvedenesheved' the 'head' of it).
